Community Engagement
9/11 Ceremony
After the horrendous attack on the United States of America on September 11, 2001, the First Responders endeavored to ensure that its citizens would “never forget” the sacrifices made by so many after the largest attack on American soil so three (3) Over the Mountain communities came together to commemorate the event each year. The Cities of Homewood, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills rotate the event each year and honor the First Responders that lost their lives or served that fateful day in New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA. In 2024, the City of Mountain Brook served as host for this meaningful event for the Over the Mountain communities.
Memorial Garden (Thin Blue Line Memorial)
The Memorial Garden was created to support Vestavia Hills Police Department (VHPD), its officers, their families and the City of Vestavia Hills. We do this through benevolence, community outreach and education in addition to support of its officers. A major goal of the Foundation was to erect a memorial appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers.
The Memorial was established at the entrance to the VHPD as a constant reminder to our officers each day as they enter the police department that the community is grateful for their service, and we will never take them for granted. The role of law enforcement at its core has never changed, “To Protect and Serve”, however the way in which they do their job is constantly evolving. Every day that they come to work they potentially put their lives at risk on behalf of the citizens they serve. The ‘Thin Blue Line’ monument will be a constant reminder to those that protect us and to acknowledge the support from the community and its citizens and to say “Thank You. We are grateful for your service to our community!”.
Community Night Out
The Community Night Out is part of National Night Out which is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Vestavia Hills chose to make its Community Night Out in October due to the heat and also school being out and many folks out of town.
Community Night Out is a special evening where our community comes together for fun activities, food, and a chance to meet and greet our local heroes from the police and fire departments. The mission is to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Community Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while maintaining a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Mark your calendar to join us in October 2025!
